As a descendant of the original Confederates (however misguided history has judged them), I find labeling this current crop of rebels confederates insulting. The originals would never have been so ungentlemanly as to use lasers on airmen doing their jobs.
The epithet is designed more to trigger the lefty insurrectionists, who, doubtless, would be horrified at the association. And I'm not so sure Quantrill would have refrained from using lasers if the Union had possessed helicopters - although, truth to tell, I believe Quantrill and his men were repudiated by the Confederate government.
