So many great roles, it would be hard to name a clear favorite: Open Range, Lonesome Dove, Tender Mercies, The Godfather, and on and on.
Here's a short scene from one of my favorite westerns, Open Range. Strong, memorable words, as relevant today as they ever were.
95 is a good innings. I hope I'll last that long, even if I don't leave a record like Duvall's behind me.
ReplyDeleteRIP.
Well, dang! He was a great actor -- "Open Range" is but one example.
ReplyDeleteI found this on Instapundit, something that I knew, but could not articulate"
DeleteWe are entering a spiral now where we are going to start losing the last great generation of movie stars in bunches. It’s sad and unfortunate… all the more so because we have not replaced them.

He was my favorite leading man. Understated, but always hit the nail on the head. He portrayed a man that I would have liked; and failed, to have been. He made Lonsome Dove the great miniseries that it was. His screenplay with Dianne Lane, who played Lorena was terrific.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of an actor that would have been better in Tender Mercies.
He had some great lines written for him and he always delivered.
"Rubbin's Racin''
I liked Robert Duval in everything he was ever in, but the one movie line he uttered that has stuck with me was from “Tender Mercies”: “I never trusted happiness”
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a big fan of his, I don't dislike him but I don't think he was that great.
ReplyDeleteThe poor man's Gene Hackman so to speak.
I will have to watch Open Range now after seeing it praised here. I never watched it cuz I just don't like Kevin Costner movies.
I find them ... lame, for want of a better word. No passion.
It's weird I like Silverado since I really, really disike all the stars except Brian Dennehy and the Midnight Star. She was good in Dune. That's the only Danny Glover movie I'll watch.
I'm not much of a fan of Kevin Costner, either, especially his big vanity projects. But he's pretty subdued in this one. It's pretty much an old-fashioned western, definite good guys vs. definite bad guys.
DeleteWell...darn. Mr.Duvall was a fantastically talented actor. He had a long run, and, thankfully, left a rich legacy. RIP, Mr. Duvall.
