Fun...Well I've been a long time fan of yours.

Funny you should say that about Jimmy Lunceford's band because that's what my mom used to say. She said it was a great dance band, and she loved to go watch him, and dance to him, in Hollywood.

I really don't know much about swing music except from what I learned through osmosis from my mother. But now I have "Happy Feet Friday" as a source of enjoyment.Pollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08237492723607911122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370618605188900.post-84468642127033887972010-09-24T22:52:42.738-04:002010-09-24T22:52:42.738-04:00Polly, I think this is the beginning of a beautifu...Polly, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

One of the things I liked best about the Lunceford orchestra is that it was unabashedly a dance band, a fine exemplar of the sheer joyousness of swing music. It's unfortunate that there are only two known videos of Lunceford's band: the "Soundie" I posted, and one scene from the 1941 movie, Blues in the Night.

One other thing that I especially recall about the band: In Uptown Blues, one of the tenor saxophonists hits the highest note I ever remember hearing on that instrument.Pacohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08004124282907287652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370618605188900.post-28863976520289325982010-09-24T20:55:22.535-04:002010-09-24T20:55:22.535-04:00Hot ginger and dynamite; that's what they drin...Hot ginger and dynamite; that's what they drink at night! My mom used to sing that to us when we were kids. Of course, she loved Jimmy Lunceford. She also liked Trummy Young.

Thanks for the clip.Pollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08237492723607911122noreply@blogger.com
