Had another glorious sunset a few days ago

In the top part of the photo, the lines of cloud look like dissipating smoke, while the clouds at the bottom of the picture actually look like some kind of weave or braid.

I planted an orange rattle-box tree in a separate location before the onset of winter; it was about a foot high. Now, it's around six feet tall, and bearing beautiful orange flowers.

Anybody out there got a gander at the northern lights? Supposedly they're visible in parts of North Carolina, but I haven't seen them.

  1. The northern lights could be seen here, but they were kind of unimpressive, I thought. Mainly just a purple/reddish glow in the sky, with some parts of the sky a little brighter, but nothing like the pictures you see. I would like to see the real-deal northern lights, but probably won't in my lifetime. But, I have seen two total solar eclipses, so that's cool. :-)

  2. I have friends in Tennessee who saw the lights. But you had to stay late, as in, well past midnight, to see them.

    Beautiful flowers, Paco!

  3. I had the good fortune to catch a little of the aurora australis on Saturday morning. The lower half of the sky was solid cloud but there was a dull orange glow above it. Until I got online and read about the solar storm I thought I'd seen the glow of a bushfire.

  4. Lots of people around here saw them and took photos. I didn't see them because I can't stay up that late.

  5. I used to see sunsets like that out west when I was a kid. If you look at them a certain way, the clouds look like land next to a big orange sea. I used to make up stories about it, and I've always wondered if that's why Mark Twain came up with his "continent of heaven" phrase.
