"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Curiously, more than half the beer in that video, seen on the floor of that large liquor store, is owned & brewed by ..... Fosters.
ReplyDeleteWhen paying that company for wholesale purchase, the name on their Bpay reference is: Fosters Australia.
Interesting. There's still a Fosters brewing company in Australia, but I read elsewhere that England was the company's main market (as you would know, they have brewing operations in multiple countries).
DeleteTrue John. Just about all our beers are owned by Japanese Asahi Group. Even my favorite, the venerable Tooheys New is owned by them.
DeleteThe man in the video is right about Fosters though. very few people drank it outside of Victoria.I wouldn't touch it, but when I was working in England I had some and it was great, completly different brewer.
The first beer I drank in Oz was Swan, because we were in Perth/Fremantle. After that first visit however I found the Sail and Anchor brew pub in Fremantle and exclusively drank their products when in town.
ReplyDeleteThroughout SE Asia there are two standard beers available everywhere: Heineken (there is a brewery in Singapore) and Victoria Bitters. Generally I drank VB.
Paco - regarding the popularity in England: that might be due to the prominence of Fosters in the two Barry McKenzie movies. Particularly the second, Barry McKenzie holds his own, where (spoiler alert) Count Plasma the vampire is vanquished by Barry's twin brother the Rev Kevin McKenzie with a crucifix made of blue cans.
