Bear in mind, I'm not at all attempting to discount the possibility of a national civil war. 

This is important. It signals the kind of dynamic that gripped Spain in first half of 1930s, as the govt of the Republic lurched btw Left and Right. Feel free to discount Rod Dreher's apparent insinuation that there is actual equivalence between the hatred on the right and the hatred on the left. The right mostly wants to be let alone to enjoy the culture and heritage we inherited. We hate what the left is doing, and we will fight them in the normal course of self-preservation, if necessary, but, in general, we do not hate individuals on the left with the apoplectic, mouth-frothing rage that they show toward us - although, under certain circumstances, I suppose that could happen eventually.
