Regular readers of this blog will recall that I put up a post last week in which I mentioned losing a very small firing-pin recoil spring guide rod while reassembling a Colt Model 1908 vest pocket pistol (it shot into the air because it was under pressure and I didn't maintain adequate control over it). After a couple of desultory searches, I ordered replacement rods (and some unrelated stuff) from Numrich Gun Parts.
The tracking information says I should be getting the items tomorrow. And, naturally, while engaging in a more careful search this evening, I found the missing guide rod.
Cosmic law.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you didn't find it mere minutes after paying for the replacement.
It was predicted. When it happens to me, I long ago decided to not fight it, and just replace the missing item because if I don't I'll never find it.
ReplyDeleteBut if I get a new one, I know I'll have two, so that's better than having none.
Spare parts are always good!
DeleteSo ... did you find it while cleaning or moving around?
ReplyDeleteInquiring minds want to know!
Never mind ... ... I was laughing too hard, and missed that you made a careful search!
DeleteWhen the piece launched itself, I heard a faint little "tink", that sound like it had collided with something plastic. I figured it probably bounced off something and then went who knows where; however, in closely inspecting some black plastic trays on the tall mobile metal-frame shelves next to the desk where I had been working (for probably the third time), I saw the piece lying in one of them.
ReplyDeleteI actually ordered two of these parts, so now I have three[ that should be enough for a while.
After you said you'd ordered it, I thought I found it.
ReplyDeleteThe worst part? Now that you have a spare, you'll never lose it again.
Wish me luck Paco. Yesterday I was using a borrowed post hole digger to break up some ground in the front yard. After that I layed grass rolls over the lot. It was only then I noticed a screw in knob that holds the airfilter box in was missing.
ReplyDeleteCan't get a replacement so I am pulling up all of yesterdays work and sifting through a lot of soil for a 2 inch screw knob. If I hadn't borrowed the digger I would have left it there.
My advice is to look first in the last place you think it would be.
DeleteI wish I were there to help you. I'm not very good at too many things, but I have always been exceptionally skilled - or just plain lucky - in finding things that have been lost.
Good news, my wife came out and told me she had prayed to St Andrew, apparently he is the saint for lost things, lo and behold after moving 10 square metres of grass sods and raking through about a half ton of soil, I found the little sucker. Thanks St Andrew
DeleteThat anon was Mick
DeleteI give you joy of your discovery! And blessed be the name of St. Andrew.
DeleteAhem, sorry that would be Saint Anthony, I am such a heathen.
