Fairly ghastly Saturday. I was driving with Mrs. Paco, on her first outing since her surgery, from Fairfax to Richmond to deliver some furniture to my older son. We got trapped in a massive traffic jam, and around Stafford I started to have transmission trouble. We pulled off the first exit we saw, called AAA, and a tow truck showed up within 10 minutes. The traffic back was heavy, but the driver - Chris, who works for Eddie's Repair Shop - was friendly and efficient and we finally got the old barge home.
Here's some advice: stay off of I-95 for the rest of the summer (for the rest of your life, if you can help it).

What is it with that stretch of I-95? I've traveled it for years and at various times of the year and it's nearly always a mess. I finally gave up and figured out how to go from Baltimore to Williamsburg and beyond by other routes.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear Mrs. P feels well enough for a drive. Too bad it sounds like you never made it to see your son.

And how is Mrs. Paco doing? Well I hope.
ReplyDeletePaco, regards to Mrs. Paco.
ReplyDeleteOne Very Good Thing about My Chief being retired is that I no longer have to drive I-95 6 or 8 times a year - I used to commute between Jax & Pax River...My Queen & I miss the road trips, but not that stretch of road.
one should only travel down I-95 in a tank. that way those you cant shoot out of the way, you can just run them over.
ReplyDeletemy parents moved from rehoboth to williamsburg. i used to dread the bay bridge as i have a fear of bridges, but after taking I-95 a few times i would rather face the bridge! now i take 15 & 17 to fredericksburg - makes it a bit more manageable and avoids the mixing bowl.
glad to hear mrs P was up for a road trip!
Sounds like one of those days where it is helpful if you have learned to say: "One of these days this this will be a funny story."
ReplyDeleteWimpy: Mrs. Paco made out ok, although the ride in the tow truck was a little rocky (I feel considerably tenderized myself). Still, it was better than having to walk back.
ReplyDeleteI-95 in the environs of Washington is simply one of the worst stretches of highway anywhere in the country. Today's traffic jam (or "jams", rather) apparently were caused by people going on vacation. I guess the price of gasoline must not be high enough, yet, to dissuade any appreciable number of people to either (a)fly, (b) take the train, or (c) stay home.
So what does Detective Paco drive? I'd guess either a Hudson or a DeSoto.
ReplyDeleteBest regards to the Missus. She must not have been married to you long enough to know better. Hell, I've never actually met you and I'd know better.
Detective Paco drives a canary-yellow 1938 Packard roadster. Yours truly drives a blue 1988 Suburban.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear the Missus is doing well.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been on that stretch of highway since the early 70s, and it was horrible even then. Are DC drivers still suicidal and/or homicidal? Our first impression of the DC area, in those young, naive days, was how banged-up all the cars were.
