Fear of Voting

Has-been author of psycho-sexual potboilers, Erica Jong, predicts “blood in the streets” if Obama loses.

Could be. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a certain amount of bloodletting even if he wins; no doubt there are more than a few of his friskier supporters who will consider that they’re on the right side of a revolution that has been permanently won, and will view his victory as a green light to strut and bully and generally raise hell. But “civil war”? Who’s going to be in charge on the Left? Keith Olberman? Chris “Tingle Legs” Mathews? How about Colin Powell; he’s got some military experience. Or maybe Chris Buckley will bring us to our knees with his lethal irony bombs.

If Obama does lose, and if there is violence, you know who I’m going to hold responsible (in addition to the individuals who commit it)? The mainstream media, that’s who. They’ve done nothing but frame Obama’s victory as an inevitability, helping to whip up unreasonable expectations to such an extent that a loss would be seen as yet another election “stolen” by Republicans.

I devoutly hope that there won’t be any violence; but if there is, my motto will be that of Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) in Out of the Past, who, when the femme fatale says, “Jeff, I don’t want to die!”, responds, “Neither do I, baby, but if I have to, I wanna die last.”

(H/T: Cold Fury)

Update: Priceless take on Christopher Buckley's apostasy by Iowahawk.

Update II: Of course, not all media outlets are in the tank for Barrie; for example, the ones that are getting kicked off of his campaign plane.

Update III: John at Wuzzadem is back, better than ever!

I agree, the MSM are the #1 reason for many of our election woes. If it weren't for the fact that we need media outlets for a healthy democracy, I'd love to see everyone of them fail financially.

I expect violence regardless of whomever wins. It will be the same group in any case. Keep an eye on Grant Park, Chicago, late election night and early the next morning.

Me, I'm presently in the Bay of Bengal enroute to Chittagong, and I expect the US election to have minimal impact where I am. The Bangladeshis have other concerns.

But avoid large Obama-friendly crowds election night.

Oh, and regarding Jong: now McCain has to win, just so we can all watch the spectacle of these precious literati frantically backpedalling, explaining that they were speaking metaphorically.

But if they really do want to go through with this civil war thing, ask them to hold off until I'm back in CONUS - I'd hate to miss it.

I may not understand the reality here, but based on the information from Philadelphia after the baseball game the other night, it looks like civil war not mater what happens.

One way or the other, don't get between a crowd of revelers and the plate glass window of a Korean-owned liquor store the night of the election.

I can't wait for this damned election to be over, even if I have to barricade the windows.

rebeccah, you took the words right out of my mouth! No matter who wins Tuesday, some single malt is going in my mouth. We'll see whether I'm drowning my sorrows or celebrating a close escape.

Paco, I am tired of being "Wimpy Canadian" because I am not Wimpy. I will start using RW of Ottawa or simply RW, much shorter.

RW stands for Rimpy Wanadian.

Although very funny, all these pages aren't artistic; they are predictive.

We wil be entering four very terrible years, not just for partisan journaliss, but all Americans. The Denms are in such a mood that they will persecute those who don 't go with the flow.

Rimpy Wanadian? Okey-doke...

Mr. Woo: I'm afraid you're probably right. Nevertheless, I intend to clog the flow whenever I can.
