Bingbing has a hilarious "tourist-promotion" video that makes me want to jump on the next plane to Australia.
While we're on the subject of Australia, I'd also like to thank friend and commenter Robert Blair for the three Nevil Shute books that he was kind enough to send to me. Reading is one of the few genuine pleasures in my life, and there is no gift I appreciate more than books. Thanks again, Robert!

Can't wait to go, sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteCome to Australia, enjoy our outdoor wonders so we can put another seppo on the barbie."
ReplyDeleteYojimbo,
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to go there.....ALL seppos are well done ;-)
Have you ever been there, BTW?
ReplyDeleteNot me, unfortunately. I almost had a shot a couple of years ago to fly to Australia on legitimate business, of all things, but my boss hogged the trip for himself.
ReplyDeleteI have. Great time in a great country. Probably the best trip of my life.
ReplyDeleteLegitimate business Paco?? Sounds like some understudy running an antipodean subsidiary wasn't achieving sales targets. Just a guess that.
ReplyDeleteIt's true too. I find India with its cobras and kraits quite tame compared with the constant critter attack and potential nature fatality one learns to live with in Aust, where you have to keep your mouth closed cos flies dive bomb right into it. But the US has preserved a lot of its wildlife too and must be similar.
ReplyDeleteA friend who lives up in the Swiss alps, a shepherd mind you, tells me the wolves and bears are slowly returning to Europe - he has 5 big working dogs to protect his flocks.
Oh, we have our share of poisonous snakes and spiders, and the odd man-eating cougar or bear. Oh, yes, and the deer (lawn rats, Mr. H calls them) can be quite belligerent in mating season, as well as a traffic hazard. But I don't think our killer species have quite the same panache as Australia's.
ReplyDeleteI was so looking forward to the day when I could make my way to Australia. But now I don't know. Is there enough Benedryl, or sufficent supply of antidote should whatever nasty encounter take place? Even the possibility of scorpions causes the loss of sleep when I visit my sister in El Paso, TX. Never seen one, but the power of possibility...(cold shivers ensue).

My neighbour's Jack Russell was bitten by Brown Snake that it was trying to kill in their backyard. Red Belly Black snakes occur locally as well. One slithered across the road one evening while I was taking our youngest on a driving lesson. We also have tree dwelling Funnel Web spiders and I found some sort of scorpion whilst gardening. We don't live in the bush, but in suburbia. Oh, and you don't have to worry about sharks at the beaches up north, the crocodiles keep them away. Australia, beautiful one day, deadly the next.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene in that video is when a kangaroo kicks a guy into a billibong. I also noticed that they showed Marmite as one of the perils of Australia.
