Happy Feet Friday

Some beautiful harmonizing from Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers.

  1. At one time I had a rather large collection of original recordings of the Sons of the Pioneers. I gave them to a person in order to record them on tape and she never returned them. I think I still have my Ink Spots album in storage in Los Angeles.

    Young whippersnapper update ensues.
Waaay back in the day, call it 1930-1950 or so, companies would sell complete collections of recordings by artists and groups in hardbound albums containing 4, 5, 6 records in 78 rpm format. That's what I had.

  2. "Happy Feet Friday" on Thursday...hmmm...well, I guess it's Friday somewhere when you post this, say, Australia. Gotta love the Sons of the Pioneers and the rest of the cast of "Happy Feet Friday" anyday, anytime. Thanks, Paco!

  3. Deb: I actually typed it up last night and posted it today; however, Blogger shows the date and time saved rather than posted.

Yojimbo: I have some 78s handed down by my parents, but nothing as good as that.

  4. These were hand-me-downs from myn parents as well.

The current version of the Sons of the Pioneers live and perform in....wait for it... Tucson during the winter.

  5. YoJ: I vaguely remembered that they were connected to a club or restaurant or something, so I gogled it. I found this. Sad that the old western culture is dying out in Tucson, of all places.

  7. If I'm ever at a loss when nearing certain important calendar markers for something to get my wife, anything by Roy Rogers will keep me off the hook.

Doesn't hurt that I like listening to him and the Sons of the Pioneers, either.

    Blue Shadows On The Trail.
You'll have to watch right to the end to see the humans and a right purty horse.

  10. Paco: Thank you for the link. No wonder I never hear about them anymore! I found that while searching because for some reason I had Ben Johnson singing with the Pioneers in Rio Grande instead of Ken Curtis.

There is still a western tradition here. We have the Tucson rodeo and parade every year. We still have a big event in Willcox with the Rex Allen days. Our surrounding towns are still very "rural" so don't lose heart. It should be noted that western music started to fade in the latter part of the last decade which explains a great deal of the commentary in that piece.

  11. Yojimbo: Well, that's a relief.

Speaking of Ben Jonson - and I'm probably repeating myself - I saw him in a charity rodeo at Rawhide in Scottsdale back in 1992 or 1993. He was pretty old by then, but, man, he could still ride and rope just like he always could.
