It is significant that this Citizen Kane idea is occurring to people simultaneously. Makes perfect sense. Kane started out as an idealist and then became nothing but an unscrupulous fat cat, embittered by the fact that, in the end, he couldn't compel people to worship him. Same with Al (even down to the dubiousness of his initial idealism, which was really nothing but an attempt to be somebody).
