Phew!

I'm really starting to have some fun with the camera feature on my cell phone. Yesterday, as I was riding the Washington Metro back to Vienna, I noticed that all the advertisements in my car were for Gillette deodorant. The ads were not in the most refined taste; however, given the frequency with which the air conditioning units on the Metrorail trains malfunction, I'd say Gillette has targeted a potentially lucrative market.

A couple of the photos are a little blurry; I took them while the train was moving, and was trying to do so somewhat surreptitiously, since the spectacle of a man in an immaculately-tailored double-breasted brown suit and Panama hat shooting pictures of B.O. alerts might have excited comment. The messages are pretty clear, though (as always, click to enlarge).

Ansel Adams. Psssh!

Hopefully you can get plenty of photos this Saturday as Clan Paco attends the Glenn Beck rally.

August in D.C. It was considered NECESSARY to pretty much close down the place for the summer and go somewhere healthier, at a not-to-distant point in our past.

Air conditioning and Right Guard have a LOT to explain, as far as our Nanny State goes!

Ansel Adams used aerosol deodorants? But I thought he cared about nature?!

Careful, Paco. If Homeland Security catches you taking pictures, you'll be put on the no-fly list for the rest of your life. Or at the very least, sued by somebody.

Richard: Hey, there's a lot of nature in a crowded train, too!

Rebecca: Quite possible. Of course, they'd be doing me a favor because it would serve as a useful pretext for not going on any more useless business trips.

Dear God, Paco! Obama should give hazard pay to his hard working minions for having to travel in "maladorous" conditions! You're one step away from "foul", for goodness sake!

"Maladorous"? Who the heck uses "maladorous"? It seems that a partial refund from the university I attended in in order. The things you learn at Paco Enterprises!

Are you planning on leaving early Friday night? It's going to be a zoo. There are more buses set to arrive than for Obama's inauguration. Bet it looks better on the evening of 8/28 than it did in Jan '09. Enjoy!

Is the Beck rally on or off? I heard some drivel about how the loony lefties were claiming that since MLK once delivered a speech there, it can never be used by lesser mortals again.

Or something like that. It wasn't awfully clear. Go figure.

I actually have an Ansel Adams original print - well, sort of.

It's a direct print from a 6x8 plate shot by Adams (Moon Over Half Dome) but rejected for various reasons, mostly a tiny speck of dust most people would never notice. The negative was kept by his assistant, who several years ago got permission from the estate to go ahead and print and sell them. I snapped it up for $30

Mojo: That's got to be worth more than $30. Nice snag!

I understand that the British Foreign Office considered Washington D. C. a hardship post before air conditioning became available. Presidents and Secretaries of State used to leave the city during the summer, going to Vermont or Maine or some similar place.

In "Asterix in Switzerland" a Roman, who is thrown into the lake as a forfeit for losing his piece of bread in the fondue at an orgy, is named Malodorus Caseus.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one wearing a Panama Hat with my tailored [three-piece] suit.
