The classic opening scene of The Killers (1946). One of my favorite William Conrad roles. Pure, silky menace.

"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
My favorite part of the film is when Burt Lancaster is shot while Steve Martin is making coffee in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'll be posting a scene or two from Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid in the coming weeks.
ReplyDeleteWilly was much better as the Mikado.
ReplyDeleteCheers
I find it interesting that the first part is all there is to the short story. The rest of the movie is tacked on.
ReplyDeleteBut with Ava Gardner as the "dame". who's complaining?
Mojo: Absolutely correct. The movie is "based" on Hemingway's story, but only the first 15 minutes or so have anything to do with the original work (although that 15 minute segment is pretty rigorously faithful to it).
ReplyDeleteGreat music by Miklos Rosza.
ReplyDeleteThat theme: dah, da-dum dum dah.
Was it later simplified for Dragnet? Or are they both based on an older piece of music?
It's one of the few pieces of music I've heard all my life but never sure of the origin of.
Bruce: the Dragnet theme was written by Walter Schumann. Sounds a bit like Rosza's soundtrack, though, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteOr rather, the opening few bars do.
