No doubt someone high up in the ATF hierarchy got a commendation for "Gun Walking". They probably sold it on the idea that not only can they trace guns in Mexico (hah!), they can blame American gun owners for the problem. A win-win, from their perspective.
Needless to say, someone didn't think the idea through, as in, the Mexican police is hardly the model of cooperation, and American law enforcement were murdered with some of the weapons. Now the fools are in full spin mode.
The ATF's responses to the original in-house complaints about the problem was to fire the clown who implemented it and give him jurisdiction over its inevestigation.
