The problem with this idea...

...is that it would give us two more Democratic senators.
A state Republican legislator has introduced a bill to the Illinois General Assembly to separate the Chicago's county from the state--effectively making the midwestern city the 51st state in the union.

The bill, filed by State Rep. Bill Mitchell of Decatur Tuesday, would "enact legislation dividing Illinois and Cook County into separate states" because county residents "hold different and firmly seated views" on "politics, society, and economics" from people in the rest of the state. The bill's supporters point to higher tax rates and strict gun laws in the Chicago area and contend that the northern county is out of step with its Illinois neighbors.

  1. You can't blame Illinois for wanting to be free of Chicago. A split won't work, though, because without the rest of the state, Chicago would be Detroit within five years.

  2. Chicago dominates the state, politically and financially. So Rebecca speaks rightly. Especially on turning into Detroit, because the only thing preventing that now (and for one helluva long time) is a major infusion of Federal cash.

Now, if Chicago wanted to secede from the Union, and become another country, hey, THAT is something I could support.

  3. Break Chicago into 'neighbourhood cities', and then refuse to incorporate them.

  4. There are two things about Chicago that most of us downstate find abhorrent.

    It's a cesspool of liberalism.

    It's home to the Cubs.

There are a few liberals and Cub fans around here, but we just grin and bear it when we're around them in public. Kinda like your eccentric old Aunt Pearn.
