Anybody checked the names of these suspects against Tea Party web sites, yet?

Three punks kill a 62-year-old Chicago man in an exhibition of the “knock ‘em down” game.

Good thing that Chicago doesn’t permit its law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons. The victim might have shot and missed and hit a nun carrying a fruit basket to a shut-in. Besides, the cops caught the perps, so what’s the problem?

The reaction in Chicago will be predictable. After a kid was hit in the head with a board and then stomped to death for no good reason while walking home from school, AG Eric Holder and Mayor Daley held a press conference to push for more gun control. The Brady Campaign press release at the time (bolding mine) :
In the wake of a recent high-profile beating death of a Chicago Public School student...Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement: "The youth violence problem in Chicago is a gun violence problem."

To paraphrase John Wayne : Life is hard, but it's harder for everyone when the establishment is stupid.

Chicago doesn’t permit its law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons

This is true for the entire state of Illinois. I would remind you that the law abiding can't carry a gun but Chicago Aldermen can (except those Aldermen who are convicted felons) because the law claims the Aldermen are law enforcement officers.

In contrast, a few years ago a guy got arrested in Chicago for transporting a gun in his car in accordance with state law. He had to spend the night in jail and when they realized he hadn't broken any laws; instead of offering a groveling apology they charged him with disorderly conduct (or disturbing the peace or something like that).

They have their own priorities.

from Mayor Bloomberg : "Well, I would take it one step further. I don't understand why the police officers across this country don't stand up collectively and say, we're going to go on strike. We're not going to protect you. Unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what's required to keep us safe."

that sounds a lot like "do what I say or else." Don't forget, his saying that cops should stand by and do nothing as people are murdered is because he deeply cares about public safety.

According to the Supreme Court, the police are not Constitutionally required to protect citizens.

So Bloomberg's suggested tactic is already in place. Legally.

JeffS,
In most places there is a big difference between the police making judgements as to what their priorities should be as they do their job and simply not doing their job.
