I'm thinking overindulgence in corn liquor, but draw your own conclusions
It could be aliens were alerted by radio activity on Earth and came to investigate, in the '30s. By the '50s, they decided humans were too primitive, and left.
Rinardman, I've often thought that something was seriously wrong with the gene pool that produced that monstrosity. Perhaps his family tree has no branches.
