Hugo Chavez hands in his dinner pail

But what a ride! This defender-of-the-poor-and-oppressed schtick really pays off.
Criminal Justice International Associates (CJIA), a risk assessment and global analysis firm in Miami, estimated in a recent report that the Chávez Frías family in Venezuela has “amassed a fortune” similar to that of the Castro brothers in Cuba.

According to Jerry Brewer, president of CJIA, “the personal fortune of the Castro brothers has been estimated at a combined value of around $2 billion.”

“The Chávez Frías family in Venezuela has amassed a fortune of a similar scale since the arrival of Chávez to the presidency in 1999,” said Brewer in an analysis published in their website.

Update: Chavez died on the the 60th anniversary of Stalin's death. Ed Driscoll marks the occasion by digging up Uncle Joe's New York Times obituary, which indicates how little the Times has changed.

Update II: The condolences are rolling in from Pig Man's fans on the left. Note particularly George Galloway's Tweet, in which the execrable Brit calls Chavez a "modern day Spartacus".

Please spell his name correctly in future, it is Huge Chav.

Huge Chav chased a large number of educated, entrepreneurial, middle class Venezuelans to the United States. It never made the press because they paid their own way here, set up businesses, got jobs and generally added to the country. Plus, they didn't want to draw attention to themselves for fear of reprisals against family still in Chav's Paradise. What they will do now is an interesting question.

Chavez will surely be missed. Dedicated champion of progress for his people, his region and bright example for all world leaders. He proved u don't have to kiss Uncle Sam's A77 or flush his toilet in return for protection/ friendship/ self esteem & economic progress. Venezuela lost a great leader!!

Shorter Dard: he made the trains run on time, damnit!

Oh, what economic progress? Unless you mean "enriching himself and his family to the tune of at least $2 Billion."

Interesting about the 60th anniversary. Perhaps Chavez was the reincarnation of ol' Joe Stalin?

Yeah, the second time as farce, indeed.

Somehow, I don't think Venezuelans are going to miss Chavez as much as you think they will, Dard.

"HE's Spartacus!" (points)

Oh, sorry. What?

Galloway no doubt sees himself as Crassus.

My great half-uncle Octavian Hume actually set up one of the first modern schools in India (in Etawah UP). Nowadays almost all young Indians attend school and get educated, unlike previous generations. One result is they can recite leftist screed verbatim. Progress!

Mind you, India leftist's anti-Americanism really is just about Nixon's personal feud with Indira, which had US supporting Pakistan and India courting Soviets. They carry a grudge a long way. Hey Rahul, rhymes with fool, mera betta fool fool fool.
