Living in Australia...

...builds character.

  1. Folk complain of Australian snakes, sharks, jellyfish, octopodes and various lethal spiders without mentioning ants; found in the Tasmanian bush (and suburbs) is the Jack Jumper (Myrmecia pilosula): these satanic insects kill more people in Tasmania each year (from the resultant anaphylaxis, usually) than snakes, spiders, jellyfish and sharks combined.

  2. Out in the bush on Saturday I found a hidden ant's nest on a wooded slope, taller than me - over 6 foot high and about the same at the base. Biggest I've seen.

But these are peaceful ants, not jumpers fortunately. I've always been terrified of Blue-Ringed Octopusses.
