It would be foolish in the extreme to trust that the Powers That Be won't change the rules in a heartbeat when their power and wealth are threatened by instability.
Exactly why I took my SS as soon as I turned 62. Get it while you can, that's my motto.
And to further stick it to the man, I now consider myself retired. You can take my retirement when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
R-man: I'm with you. Every time I see one of those financial advice columns exhorting me to hold off until age 65 (or even 70), I can only laugh. I know too many people who have put off retirement from crappy jobs just to get that extra bit of chump change from SS, only to die within a year or two of closing the office door behind them for the last time.
