Ukrainian sources, grain of salt and all that, but still - isn't this something that honest, inquisitive reporters would want to track down? Are there really no such people anywhere in the mainstream press?

Not really. There might be a couple of outcasts from the MSM (like Sharyl Attkisson), but their audience is small and the MSM just ignores them and their small audience.
The main stream media -- and a lot of the smaller outlets -- are effectively the propaganda arm of the left.
