I've found that the more outrageous the hot sauce name the less hot it is.
I once bought "Jamaican Hellfire" hot sauce.
Yawn.
There are a bunch of really hot sauces from Mexico in AZ.
Valentina has a few levels, the lowest is still pretty darn hot.

The absolute hottest stuff I ever had was some kind of sauce my mother-in-law brought back from Peru. I put a few drops on a mound of rice, and the stuff was almost inedible. I recall accidentally spilling a bit too much of something called A Woman Scorned (as in, "Hell hath no fury", etc.) into a bowl of chili. The waitress asked me if I wanted another bowl, and, putting on an air of bravado, I said, "no, no, I like it hot!" I had tears running down my cheeks within a few seconds.

Speaking of Peru, our family hosted a high school exchange student from there in 1964. Nelson taught my mother how to make a Peruvian dish called loma saltado, except he lamented that he didn't have the proper hot sauce to make it the way it should be. I don't know what he used to make it while he was here, but it was still hot enough that I thought I was going to loose my tongue, the first time I ate some of it. I don't think I'd want to try any made with his idea of hot sauce! It may have been some of the same stuff your mil had.

I use a lot of hot sauce on various meals, but I draw the line at heat for the sheer sake of heat. Some hot sauces are so hot you can't taste anything, and that's not what I want. I want taste in my food, hot or not.

Anything hotter than a habanero is only going to numb your tastebuds as soon as it hit your tongue (some habaneros are hotter than others, so even those would do it). Liquor over 100 proof has the same effect.

Spiny Normal, agree with you. I avoid anything with habanero in it, partly because it's usually super hot, but also it has a chemical taste I don't like.

I mostly use Frank's hot sauce.
I don't like the commercial, but I do put that sh*t on everything.
