Rock around the Glock!

I picked this Glock 23 Gen4 up yesterday and took it to the range today.

Long story short: awesome. The .40 caliber cartridges obviously have a little more snap than  9mm, but recoil is totally manageable. The gun performed flawlessly, and, although I was using a pistol alley on an outdoor range that only allowed me about a 15-yard distance from the target, I got some bull's eyes on orange dots that were only two inches in diameter; made me feel like Sgt. York (i.e., sights are dead on). In terms of performance and enjoyment, it's almost as good as my Walther P99 (you can't beat Walther's feel in the hand).

I'm glad I bought it. It came with three 13-round magazines, a neat loading tool, a cleaning rod and brush, plus five - count 'em, five - extra backstraps in case I wanted to change my grip (I didn't). Another good score from AIM Surplus.

It ain't a beauty queen, but neither am I, so we ought to get along fine.

Update  I also got in a shipment of .40 caliber ammo today (a mix of FMJ and JHP) from America's Gun Store. I've bought some nice holsters from them in the past, and lately I've been purchasing some ammo. The company includes a 4-bit pocket screwdriver set with each purchase. Just a knickknack, but a nice touch, I think.

Really nice!! It's great to get all the extras with it.

I think it was the extras that pushed me over the line. I love three magazines (much more generous than some of the Rugers and Berettas).

I like my 2340, it's .40 S&W. I have a couple 12 rounders and 3 10 rounders. I got one 12 rounder with it when I bought it used. It was marked "law enforcement only" so I figure the 10s were from the ban-times.
That's the smoothest auto I've fired. A friend who fired it became a Sig guy, that's all he'll buy anymore.
I just don't see a need to get another scary, black pistol so I'm just getting more mags for it if I do anything so I don't see a Glock in my future. Unless they make a 10mm. I might get a 10mm pistol, I like new calibers.

I used to have a 40 S&W Beretta Storm, the mags matched a CX-4 Storm carbine, but it was so aggressively plastic that I just didn't like it so when I needed money I sold it. I don't see myself replacing it.
I'm going shotgun next I think. Since I apparently can't get a Tac-14dm or a mag-fed Mossberg Schockwave, I think I'm just going for a mag-fed, full length shotgun and put a pistol grip on it.

V: I don't have any Sigs, but I've always read and heard great things about them. Good luck with your shotgun shopping.

A friend has two Glocks in .40. Both ported, so the upwards V-shaped flash when shooting in low light is impressive.

I have a Glock 21 in .45 ACP, and two 1911s. So according to the gun internet I should be in a perpetual state of internal civil war. Or maybe I'm just schizophrenic. Anyway, I like Glocks okay. They go bang every time I pull the trigger, even if they have the sex appeal of Rosie O'Donnell in a Hello Kitty outfit. Plus, 13 rounds of big bore ammo is no slouch.

Nice!

I have a little revolver, looking for a newer revolver.

kc: For carry or home protection? How little is the one you have? Are you looking for a bigger one?

The Glock 23 is a good pistol, especially for concealed carry. The Glock 21 is a good pistol as well, but about as easy to conceal as a full sized 1911.

I prefer .40 S&W and .45 ACP -- I hear 10mm is a good caliber as well (it's certainly bigger than the .40 S&W!), but I am not in the market for a new caliber.

Sig Sauer makes excellent pistols, in addition to being pretty, but they are spendy. Glocks are a reasonable alternative, even if they aren't pretty. As Steve says, "They go bang every time I pull the trigger".

(And thanks for that mental image, Steve -- I used the last of my brain bleach on that one.)

In this day and age, I can only emphasize having spare magazines -- at least 3 per weapon. In that sense, wheel guns beat semi-autos.

Thanks for the link, Paco -- I need to check that out!

Extra magazines are a must. I, too, try to have at least three for every pistol (for the rifles with detachable mags, even more). Some companies really gouge you, though. I haven't checked recently, but Ruger's prices for new magazines (some models, anyway) always struck me as exorbitant. I toyed with the idea of buying a Savage Scout rifle, but it uses a proprietary magazine, and single magazines, as I recall, go for over 60 bucks. Never mind...

JeffS said...

Yeah, proprietary magazines are a pain. Knock offs can be unreliable.

But not having a magazine is a real problem. So choosing a weapon wisely is ... ... wise.

There are good third party Glock magazines available. Some plastic magazines for AR15s can be unreliable (found that out during a 3 Gun shoot).

Sig's mags for my two are around $40.
Of course, I'm one of those "If I like it it'll fail" folks so both of my Sigs have been discontinued, but the mags for newer models fit.
Of course, I have a .45acp subcompact, so getting the mags for that was difficult. They're mostly 9mm. They probably sold 4 of them in .455acp.
I sent them an email asking if they had mags, they're not on the website, and got a call from 'some guy', who I had to trust and give him my credit card info and hope I got the mags.
I did! Yay!

I mentioned here that I found ammo for my Martini Henry that was less than $10/round, instead of around $20. It just showed up. Woo Hoo!

Yes, you've got to be selective. The reviews for some of the third-party manufacturers of mags for AKs and ARs are all over the place.

One of the interesting things about the Glock 23 I found out is that you can fairly easily substitute barrels in other calibers (.357 Sig, for example, or 9mm).

I'm waiting for a delivery 04 .40 bullets -- 165 grain flat nose, full metal jacket.

They were supposed to be delivered today. But FedEx changed their minds. Gonna be a few more days, grrrrrr!
