"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh

Naw, that was placed by aliens trying to encourage the development of sentient life forms here on Earth.
In the military, we called that sort of mission a "forlorn hope".
Forlorn hope is a mistranslation of the Dutch term verloren hoop, literally "lost troop." All the same, both terms encompass the concept, which originally referred to a vanguard chosen to lead a storming party, that was expected to suffer excessive casualties. Essentially, a suicide mission.
In this particular case, some performance artist is having a yuck. Watch the New Yorker or The Atlantic or one of the other smug coastal elitist rags to have a gushing cover story within a month. Bonus points if it ties it back to Trump.

Exactly.
It's pretty lame compared to Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo,Tx.
Yeah, it can't hold a candle to the Cadillac Ranch.
It must have taken a pretty penny and a bit of effort to haul that thing out into the desert, set it into the ground (with an excavator? shovels?), and not leave a trace around it. How did whoever did it know that it would be found? I have some questions, and I'm going to be mightily disappointed if it turns out to be some kind of corporate publicity stunt.
Yes, I wondered how whoever set it knew it would be found... and the only explanation I can think of is whoever did it tipped off the surveyors.
Yeah, this has "stunt" written all over it. Again, watch for the breathless articles in the coastal media on this brave transgressive artists.
Or, it really could be that thing from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
2020 is the year the aliens make contact, it has to be.
Like when we had bushfires we thought that was the worst, but then we had flooding rain, digging ditches to stop the water coming in, and forgot all about the fires. So this year has to end with a bigger bang.
Bruce, suppose they already did and we missed it?
Stupid self absorbed humans, too wrapped up in our own local issues to properly welcome the visitors in our midst...
