Dance of the Seven Veils from Richard Strauss's Salome.

Mrs. Paco and I attended this opera when we lived in Miami; it was quite a dramatic work, very enjoyable.

  1. Yeah, beware of Salome's seductive dance. First you lose your mind, then you lose your head.

  2. Well, that's a serious work to take on. It's a one-act opera with no intermission, and Salome stays on-stage singing almost constantly for over an hour and a half. That can be exhausting. In one production I attended, they had a rocky backdrop on the stage into which they inserted almost invisible little tubes connected to water bottles. Salome would occasionally put her face to the wall to sneak a drink.

  3. A & A: It was a long one act, to be sure, but we really enjoyed it. There was a rocky backdrop in the performance we saw, too; I wonder if the same artifice was used?
