Paul Joseph Watson on the stupidest, and possibly most dangerous, hoax of all time.
New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak makes Mitt Romney look like Donald Trump. The Tories have become notoriously invertebrate, but, as friend and commenter Bruce mentioned previously, "Bear in mind that British Conservatives emerged as the party representing the aristocracy and have never had a consistent policy beyond that: at first they were protectionists, but then they switched to economic liberalism when they saw it made them richer. And they've been flip flopping ever since."
Thanks. What I said is a crude generalisation. Robert Peel founded the modern Cons Party making a break with old Toryism.
ReplyDeleteYet from an outside perspective it's hard to see much difference, and certainly from the American perspective where all hereditary privilege was outlawed for the get-go.
And Peel's own 'modern' Conservative Party was just as reformist as opposition Radicals, flip-flopping on all the major issues, which was seen as a good thing at the time, because 'progress' was key even back then. The only debate was how much.
from the get-go. Slip of the pen.
ReplyDeleteFixation on 'progress' goes way back. But I guess some types of progess slipped thru the cracks over the decades. Such as progress towards individual liberty.
Instead now we have 'freedoms' bestowed by 'authorities'.
Yet from an outside perspective it's hard to see much difference, and certainly from the American perspective where all hereditary privilege was outlawed for the get-go.
ReplyDeleteThat was the intent. The reality is that we've been plagued with dynasties since the 19th century, based on money. The Robber Barons (railroad, steam ship, steel manufacturers) were merely the first. The Kennedys were the most famous (or infamous, if you prefer), but since then we've been afflicted with Clintons and Bushes. Thankfully, the Bidens are too dumb and dirty to establish one.
I can add, a few Indian families got very rich under the protection of the British Empire. Selling Indian opium to China (it's a myth that this was white exploitation) and trading with places like East Africa where Rishi Sunak's folks made their fortune.
ReplyDeleteIn some ways, the effects of the 19th century Robber Baron era are still with us.
Remember you were surprised at Freddie Mercury's British African birth? Not his family maybe, but the richest private families in East Africa are still Indian origin, partly thanks to the British. You begin to see how an Indian Conservative Prime Minister became inevitable, and also how much Conservative politics revolves around wealth.
