Sunday funnies (abbreviated Friday edition)

I'll be taking a short break from blogging for a few days; however, our regular broadcast will resume Monday evening. Here are a few funnies to end the workweek with.

(H/T: Friend and commenter JeffS)

  1. I didn't get that last one. Must be an Aussie thing.

  2. The original Marmite was invented in England and it's primarily a food (?) eaten by poms. I read somewhere that the Marmite that you get in Australia is some kind of New Zealand variant. Perhaps our Australian readers can weigh in. I just enjoyed the extreme bias that attended the pro-Vegemite guy's position. It reminded me of similar strong food preferences in the United States (for example, I am absolutely with Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry character when he opines that no normal person puts ketchup on a hot dog). See also, pineapple on pizza, and (this may have been a warped preference held uniquely by one of my old banking colleagues), pepper on cantaloupe. Also, Old Paco's delight in dipping bread in buttermilk (tried it one time; literally gagged).

  3. I've tasted both marmite and Vegemite, and there's not a lot of difference in my view. It's very salty and rather bitter. That said, I kind of like Vegemite, but there's no way anyone of any persuasion could eat it or marmite spread that thick on a piece of toast.

Enjoy your weekend, Mr. Paco sir!

  4. Vegemite is very salty, Marmite is more sweet (maybe they reduced salt content at some stage). I have both in my cupboard because Vege is expensive and we wait for 'on special prices. I need salt in my diet for some reason. Medics are horrified.

Yes Paco it's an interesting case of a type of bias which is all around. Australia used to be a tough place, see these old blokes 60 years ago 'The quickest way to get in a fight in a pub':

No women allowed in the main bar in those days. Took me a while to figure out the code of obligation - having to pay for rounds of beers.

  5. The interviewer in that video is Gerald Stone, an American who migrated here and worked for Rupert Murdoch. He would have known Miranda Devine's father Frank. Knowing Rupert and Miranda's roots in that era, nothing about them ever surprises me. Attempts to depict Rupert as some sort of super-villain just make me laugh.

  6. Long ago in the mid 80's I used to travel fairly regularly to Rockville Maryland for work. There was a popular song at the time called "I Come From A Land Downunder" by an Aussie group called Men At Work that mentioned a Vegemite sandwich.
The office ladies there thought this was something very exotic so I brought a jar back with me on my next visit.
I should have provided some form of instruction because I found them using it as a dip with crackers spread about a half inch thick and trying not to gag.
As Rebecca says, thin is good when it comes to Vegemite.
