"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Ah. Paco, while still employed...
ReplyDeleteYou know, I kind of wish the fedora would come back, or at least the Stetson version of it. Sadly, it probably never will. After all, the bowler, the top hat, and the tricorn never did.

ReplyDeleteAnd a bit younger, perhaps? :-)
Now I've got all these suits and hats, and nowhere to go. I can always say, though, that I dressed the way I wanted to, fashion trends be damned. And after they saw me entering and exiting the building a few times, even a few of the big shots began to break out their fedoras.
ReplyDeleteAs I always used to say: when you're an empty suit, the suit better look good.
The hats might have kept me out of trouble a time or two, also. When I lived in Richmond and maintained an apartment in Northern Virginia (the first few years that I worked in Washington, before I started taking the train on a daily basis, and then finally moving to Fairfax), I drove home late one Friday night and stopped at a convenience store to buy cigarettes. As I was standing in line, a beefy young redneck, who'd already had a bit to drink, was buying some beer and talking loud and acting a little rowdy, and he noticed me standing there. He grinned and said, "I like that hat. I think I'll try it on." He took a step toward me then hauled up because some kind of partially formed thought permeated his intoxicated brain. He frowned and said, "You're not a cop, are you?" I said, "Why don't you break a law and find out?" He stared for a couple of seconds, then he laughed, paid for his beer and left. It's funny how all those old cop movies and tv shows seem to have become permanently associated with detectives (and also gangsters, of course).
I kind of garbled that last sentence. I meant to say that it's funny how those old cop movies and tv shows seem to have created a permanent association between police detectives and fedoras.
