"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
The days when tobacco was advertised on TV. There were even ads using TV characters. I recall Barney and Fred lighting up... which brand? Forget. Also, cast members of The Beverly Hillbillies too.
ReplyDeleteNot going to weigh in whether it's better or not banning such ads... but notice that pharmaceuticals are constantly advertised on TV, so is that any better? And what about once pot is legalized federally (you know it's only a matter of time)? I expect pot for smoking will be restricted like tobacco products are, but what about edibles? Will they be able to advertise gummies and brownies and cookies?
Winston was the preferred smoke of Fred and Barney, and also of Jed and Granny.
DeleteWe used tv personalities to peddle smokes down here as well. This one actually suckered me in as I changed from Malboro to Winfield. You may recognise the star.

What fascinates me about Marlboro is that it used to be marketed as a ladies' cigarette. Sales dropped off badly, and in the 1950's it was re-marketed as a man's brand.
DeleteHard to believe that today. Can't recall another product that so drastically changed their image. One could note Disney's lack of success in making Star Wars a girl's brand, or Marvel Comics a gay one.
