Classical corner
The second movement from Australian composer Margaret Sutherland's Clarinet Sonata.
Thanks for this. Sutherland is famous here but more as a historical figure. This piece is well-crafted and musicians will enjoy playing it, but I doubt it has much appeal to a wider audience.
Peggy Glanville-Hicks is an Australian composer from the same early 20th century era whose music is still popular with audiences, like Vaughan Williams who she studied with. Peggy's music is more quirky but in an entertaining way.
As a clarinet player in my youth, I'm always on the lookout for pieces written with that instrument in mind. Thanks for the tip on Peggy Glanville-Hicks; I'll have to listen to some of her compositions.

ReplyDeleteStart with Peggy's 'Etruscan Concerto', which has a melody you can whistle and a foot-tapping beat. It's very popular.
