"The most macabre painting in art history", by Jan de Baen. The back story - featuring the unfortunate De Witt brothers, late 17th century Dutch politicians - is extraordinarily gruesome. I don't normally associate this kind of frenzied mob violence with the Dutch, which made the story even more shocking.

The Dutch Republic was an unimaginable clusterfark. It's amazing that thy managed to kick out the Spanish, held off the French, and wrapped the Brits around the axle.
ReplyDeleteAll while having a government run like a frat party. Only not as well organized.
Every European country has gone on a few mob-violence

I'm just surprised it's been so long since the last one. (Yugoslavia)
Might be more in the near future, V.
DeleteMy reaction on seeing that painting some time back was 'Yep, typical Dutch'. In Australia we have the gruesome story of the fate of hundreds of them shipwrecked here in 1629 before the Brits arrived:

I’m finding that a lot of these videos are requiring me to sign in before I can view them, but don’t offer a link to sign in. Sometimes I can find them on YouTube, but not without searching, which often doesn’t yield results. This isn’t unique to this site, but could be a browser problem.
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of that phenomenon. Not sure why that is.
DeleteSometimes 'age restricted' stuff can't be viewed in an embedded video but it says 'view on Youtube' without restriction. Sometimes finding the link to click to get through to the Youtube site of the embedded video is hard to find, but mostly by left or right-clicking I get it. Some stuff is restricted by region - local laws, or local TV wants to run it for profit, so blocks free access.
