Gas build up in sewage systems has been an issue since the Romans built theirs. It's still a problem unto this day -- I recall a video where a manhole cover was sent into the air by a gas explosion.

I saw a video of one near my old workplace in D.C. that suddenly got launched from a sidewalk. Good thing I wasn't out there having a smoke!
Deleteoff-grid folks and preppers have systems that harvest the methane from their toilets for cooking and heating; it's just not something you want to think about while you're cooking dinner.
