I love to watch this; a friend smokes tuscano cigars very similar to these, but wider in the middle and commonly called half tuscans because they're cut in half before smoking.
ReplyDeleteOne day, while attending he University of Miami, there was an exhibition of cigar making in the student union that was set up by Padron, a local manufacturer (the Padron family were refugees from Cuba). I walked up smoking an actual Cuban cigar, which generated quite a bit of interest among the cigar makers, including the head of the company, who happened to be there. It was fascinating watching these guys do their thing. Padron was a brand I often smoked when I lived in Miami.

ReplyDeleteI don't smoke, but I did want the chance to use the word "cheroot".
It's a cool word for a cigar; I just looked up the origins of the word and found this - "late 17th century: from French cheroute, from Tamil curuṭṭu ‘roll of tobacco’."
DeleteThere are several nicknames for cigars: stogies, heaters, and, in Spanish, "puro".
It is cool! But how I learned it is bizarre.
DeleteI first saw this word in use while reading a comic book, "Sgt Fury and His Howlin' Commandos", a Marvel classic.
And it's bizarre that I remember how I learned it. But never mind that ... ...
