How the USS North Carolina was saved from the scrap heap

The battleship is just across the Brunswick County line in Wilmington, NC. My parents took my brother and me aboard when we were little, and we took our kids there, too. My favorite part of the ship (when I went aboard as an adult) was the galley. It included a mock-up of a small "store" where the sailors would have purchased things like candy bars and sodas - and Lucky Strike cigarettes (a few old packs were on display).
