I Question the Timing

Jimmy Carter - once the undisputed worst President in U.S. history - has offered an apology to Jews.

Coincidentally (I'm sure), his grandson Jason Carter recently announced that he would be running for a seat in the Georgia state Senate from a district with a "vocal Jewish population".

So, you're sorry are you, Jimmy? Well, ok...

"Apology accepted."

Update: Ace is on the story, too.

Jimmuh probably had his arm twisted by his son. Hard.

Wonder what the expiration date on this apology is?

As usual with US politics, I find that watching 'The West Wing' gets me only so far. How significant is a State Senate seat in terms of launching one's political career? In Australian politics you pick State vs Federal quite early on and going for the State Upper House is pretty much a guarantee that you will go no further - given this is a Carter perhaps no bad thing?

No point asking Paco. Since that debacle in 2006, the subject has not been raised.

Cheers

Cac, state legislators come from fairly small districts. It's not uncommon for them to be prominent business people, and quite well known to all. In most states, it's strictly a part time job. An exception is California, which is burdened by professional legislators. But, by and large, state legislators represents a fairly small group of people, whom they can have daily personal contacts.

State politics are generally played by one of three types of people:

1. The honest citizen who wants to serve their community, which is what a state representative does. Their goals are generally honorable.

2. The not-always-honest citizen who uses their office for personal gain, but stays at that level, with no desire to go to a higher level.

3. The sort who use are using the position as a stepping stone to a higher level of politics (state or national office). In which case, you just get Type I or Type II on a larger scale.

I have no read on Carter's son, so I can't say exactly what his intentions are. He may well be a different man from his cretinous father, it's hard to say. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that the guy has bigger plans. He is, after all, Jimmy Carter's son.

cac: Barack Obama was originally a state senator. On the other hand, so was one of my uncles (that's as far as he got). It can be a very useful early stepping stone.

"He's Jimmy Carter's son."

He's any Kennedy.

He's Joe Biden's son.

He's Albert Bell Gore.

He's entitled.

Just to keep the record straight, we are talking about Jimmy Carter's grandson.

JeffS said...

Yeah, I just realized that, Paco. Maybe his grandson missed getting the Carter Moonbat gene.

Paco said...

I dunno, Jeff. That could be a dominant gene. But we'll keep a good thought.

Does this mean Carter has stopped getting Saudi money?

Isophorone: I think they just mail him bags of cash now.
