Will the New Hawaii 5-0 go "Jack Bauer"?

Could be, says says Jason Apuzzo over at Libertas. The focus of the remake will be the struggle against terrorism (although there are obviously countless ways Hollywood could mess this up).

And while you're visiting Libertas, be sure to read David Ross's essay on modern art.

I'm a follower of the Robert Hughes school of art interpretation and I think a lot of criticism of modern art is wide of the mark - especially music for me. For example I enjoy 'atonal' music (most people don't realise that the greatest Catholic composer of recent centuries, Messiaen, wrote completely 'atonal' works which are magnificently true to theological goals).

But I deeply despise the recent infiltration of our culture, including art, by passive-aggressive narcissistic tendencies.

Lack of spiritual values is one way to describe it. Another way is the abandonment of the old Aristotelian notion of the Good Life of Virtue.

From another tradition I have adopted the idea that we should aspire to be Noble and Skillful in our lives and acts - Dignified. recent art lacks Dignity.

Even Jackson Pollock, mad as he was, aspired to heroic nobility and dignity through his art. You can be as original, Romantic, even decadent, as you like and still wholesomely inspire people if you retain dignity and noble aspirations. But that has been, quite recently, abandoned.

The first one being re-making yet another TV show with modern twists, but still unable to produce an original plot. I say this given the multitude of recent re-makes (mostly movie), most of them stinkers on all levels.

I could be wrong, of course. But I rather doubt it.

Up next: Dragnet with Sergeant Friday as a transvestite with a tendency to pun a lot.

Bruce, recent art lacks CLASS, let alone dignity. That's what happens when anyone with a college degree in "Art" and astigmatism can call themselves an "artist", and get some clueless schmuck to bankroll their latest "inspiration".

The new Hawaii 5 O stars Aussie Alex O'Loughlin as Steve McGarrett. They were filming an episode at the USS Missouri Memorial while we were visiting Pearl Harbor earlier this year.

As for art, I know what I like and the nuance of most of the modern pieces escapes or annoys me. Paint me a story of life and hope. Not misery and despair.

I don't know about all this. All I know is that if the new Hawaii Five-0 doesn't have Wo Fat (the epitome of genial menace) in it, it's not Hawaii Five-0. Call me old-fashioned...Greg Cameron, Surrey, B.C., Canada
