One of my favorite blues musicians: Brownie McGhee (love that voice!)
Today only, a bonus video! Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee perform my all-time favorite blues tune, "Key to the Highway". Feel free to ignore the pasty-faced commie banjo plucker (Pete Seeger).
Update: Invincible Armor has some smooth Willie Dixon doin' "Back Door Man".

These two playing "Waking My Blues Away" is a classic. They had a tightness that others couldn't match. If Ry Cooder did nothing else he led me to the real thing. He had that.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad caught me listening to Elmore James "One Way Out" played by a Detroit station (Blue Line?) on his beautiful German radio. He threw the radio out the window.
Sorry about the radio. But it was worth it, right?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! In the time of psychodelic rock, of which I liked, I played drums in a Bules band. We played the wrong side of the tracks in many towns and, as white boys, acquired a band name given us by an elderly black man who sat in on harp. Yep, he used to tell doubtful patrons to not worry because we were a bunch of Honky MFs. My mother thought it meant "mighty fine."
ReplyDeleteJust before my Dad died I purchased him another radio. I can't remember if it was a Grundig or a Blaupunkt, but it had a telescoping antenna that, when open, went up to the ceiling.
