ReplyDeleteIn Republican Rome, this would have had the College of Augers, the Pontifex Maximus, the Vestal Virgins, the Flamines, and the entire Senate diving into the Tiber. Crassus would have quietly shuttered his moneylending shops, Pompey would have coughed delicately and hurridly departed on an inspection tour of Ostia. Cicero would have bolted for his country farm, and Cato would be querulously asking why he put on his black toga so early because this was the time for it, and how much blacker could it be?
