It's the same thing with glasses. If I think about it, I can see way more of my glasses than I can my nose. But if I'm not thinking about it, they also disappear.
When I was in college, I could see my hair, if I thought about it. I stopped being able to do that about ten years later, but it wasn't because of Unconscious Selective Attention.
I think it was Unconscious Hair Loss.
Unfortunately, there's a lot more I often don't see when I'm looking for it, even when it's right in front of my face. This is a phenomenon known as "item blindness", and I grow more susceptible as I get older.
