I know what a Sam Browne belt is...
...but just recently learned its history.
Old Paco wore one when he was a city cop back in the mid-1950s. Very dashing!

"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
I recall that George MacDonald Fraser has Flashman commenting on the Sam Brown belt in one of the books, probably the one set during the Indian Mutiny.
ReplyDeleteThat I can't remember more specifically tells me that it's time to reread the series again.
Fascinating history.
ReplyDeleteMy dad wore a Sam Browne belt with his uniform (when he quit his career as a perforation engineer with the oil industry, he became a small town cop). Eventually, the department did away with the belts, but he kept his. I always thought they looked great.
ReplyDeleteColonial police chiefs wear them in TV shows to mark their authority.
