Kids say the darnedest things

Democrat senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris admitted she smoked pot in her youth, and suggested that it was a Jamaican thing. Her Jamaican father just gave her a big time-out:
In a statement to Jamaica Global Online, Donald Harris called his daughter’s remarks a “travesty” and accused her of stereotyping.

“My dear departed grandmother … as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he said.

“Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty."

  1. The West Indies has a very conservative and religious, educated class who hold things together, more or less. After slavery was abolished indentured labourers were brought from India - in Trinidad 'Hindus' make up half the population but also prominent in Jamaica and Guyana. They are said to have brought Marijuana to the area, supposedly part of their religious ceremonies at first. The evidence that it's an Indian thing is that even in Jamaica it's called by Hindi name 'Ganja'. Even African parents look down on this 'foreign' drug.

On the other hand Tamils don't use Ganja, only North Indians, so Kamala's mother also would not approve. (Don't know where the parents met, mother doesn't seem to be West Indian).

Her foolishness is exposed, for those who are listening. Neither her father nor her mother's people will be happy, she just sounds like she's been corrupted, from their perspective.

  3. If she belonged to a Obamaesque "choom gang", I'm sure we'll hear from one of them about how she used drugs responsibly, and is therefore a good candidate for POTUS.

Or, it may turn out she's making it all up because she thinks it plays well with her base.

  4. Democrats, whether they actually did it or not, need to say they did to get the street cred. They live for the street cred.

  5. R-man: And what better way to acquire street cred than to demonstrate the prescience of noting Snoop Dog's and Tupac's promising talents 10 years before anybody ever heard of them.
