Tom Hanks is set to star in the upcoming movie, Greyhound, which is based on C.S. Forester's novel, The Good Shepherd, about a convoy of ships making the hazardous trip across the Atlantic in WWII, pursued by German U-Boats (reviewed by yours truly here more than nine years ago - Lord! Has this thing been going on that long?).
Mel Gibson is also working on another film, focusing on the biggest kamikaze attack of WWII (details here).

Bogie's in a good movie about Liberty ships.
ReplyDeleteI don't trust Tom Hanks anymore after Pacific. It was billed as Band of Brothers for Marines but it wasn't.
He said some stuff at the time that bothered me and that series really harped on Marines pulling gold teeth from dead Japanese. I mean, they were relentless about it.
I'm rooting for it to be good but I wouldn't count on it.
Didn't see that Hanks film; believe I'll give it a miss. If he sticks to the book on the new one, he ought to be alright.
ReplyDeleteHe was involved in the production of the series. It was 8 or 10 shows and meant to be like Band of Brothers.
ReplyDeleteIt was during the reign of Chimpy McBusHitler. Hanks wasn't a fan.
Back in your 2009 comments Michael Lonie mentioned The Cruel Sea which has cult status as a movie:

I wonder if Gibsons movie will mention USS Brown. My uncle served aboard her at Okinawa, family lore has it that he was up for court martial for slugging the 2nd in command (which was his wont everywhere he went) but they dropped it after he shot down a kamikaze one morning when they were in a supposedly safe area.
ReplyDeleteThere was a website about the Brown a few years ago and all she went through, my uncle got a mention although they screwed up his name, Schneieder instead of Snider.
I can't find it now, probably because there were no sailors of color aboard so my uncle was a racist so Winston had to unperson the ship.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should change Googles name to Winston? Just a thought.
Jonah: Three cheers for your uncle! He sounds like quite a capable man.
ReplyDeleteHere's an archived site Jonah:

It has Snider on the list and mentions Kamikazes. You could say who needs movies when real history is so amazing?
I found the site from an old link on the ship's Wikipedia page, yes they seem to have recycled the page about 10 yrs ago, now it goes to a school.
Great site, Bruce! Thanks.
