Most people don't believe in the unicorn of American unity

Ace of Spades has a very good post up discussing a recent poll that reveals that 67% of Americans think we're on the verge of a civil war. A sample:
The pablum issuing from NeverTrumpers and Neocons is just creating a pleasant illusion in which it's 2003 forever and the only thing that should really matter is whether we are "consistent" on Trump and Clinton, preferring that political Neverland to the actual America we find ourselves in in 2019, pretending away unpalatable truths in favor of pleasant fantasies, continuing to pretend that everything's great (and that which is not great can just be saved by another round of tax cuts and trade deals), and that the left isn't scary at all -- that's just Evil Trump trying to convince you that they're really serious about their openly announced plans to seize America's guns and force churches to perform gay marriages, or go to prison.
The NeverTrumpers and the rest of the GOP-e are little more than Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, managing a long withdrawal before the aggressive onslaught of progressive forces. I'm not sure what they hope to accomplish. Maybe they're looking for some sort of amnesty from their future totalitarian overlords. Count me out of the retreat.

"The fact that 67% of Americans recognize that [they are on the edge of a civil war] is actually good news."
Agreed, and I would like to think that this is a wake-up call, rather than a message of doom, for the rest of the world. But I'm finding it increasingly difficult to be that optimistic.

As I say, I was a PhD dropout. Never realised the NeoCons were so into Hegel via Leo Strauss. Woodrow Wilson was a Hegel fan too, this runs deep. (Hegel is the 'spiritual' father of Marx who inverted H's 'geist' dialectic to a 'materialist' one, blah blah...) 'End of History' is a big Hegel theme.

The only way out of that hole is to reduce Federal government and all the experts. Eisenhower looks more prophetic every day. CIA, FBI, now the State Dept. have let you down. Great article:

Skeeter: A wake-up call, indeed.

Bruce: Great stuff.

BTW, I used to think that Eisenhower's warning was a little bizarre, but not anymore.

Just realised that if I wanted to sum up Hegel in 2 words, I'd choose 'manifest destiny'.

Hegel developed this idea that the 'geist' of history became manifest in the modern state. He was paraphrasing John's Gospel, 'the Word became flesh'. It's intoxicating, savants love this kind of stuff, in the 1800s they got very carried away thinking about it. People like Woodrow Wilson who was some kind of professor.

Comey, Brennan et al are probably more savants than evil, otherwise they'd be hiding not blathering. Literal minded, don't realise they are being conned by a bunch of cunning foxes like Clinton, Biden and others we haven't heard of yet.

We've been conned by world leaders like the Russians, starting with Stalin who was happy to use the naive West (and useful idiots) to achieve his ends of territorial expansion. The UN is the epitome of this.

The ruthless cunning fox/wolves of this world are good at using a bunch of naive but clever savants to work for them and insulate them from scrutiny, with high minded ideas to keep the idiots on task. Trump is the perfect person to see through all this, but it's too much for one man to remove in a short time.
