Wassail:spiced ale or mulled wine drunk during celebrations for Twelfth Night and Christmas Eve.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know that. So, this is both a Christmas song, and a drinking song. :)
BTW, TEF would be my second choice for the singing voice I'd most like to have, if I could.
Yeah, even though I've heard this song off and on for years, I never really knew what "wassailing" was all about.
ReplyDeleteTEF was, indeed, a magnificent baritone.
Totally off the topic of Christmas, but it does have a catchy beat.

TEF is one of my favorites. I don't know if I've ever had spiced ale or mulled wine, but it sounds good, especially after a round of caroling... or before and after.
ReplyDeleteI think I've said this before, ACE brand has a wonderful pear cider with only 5% alcohol. It would be great to poach salmon in. Of course, the Julia Child method would be best... "One for the fish and two for you!"
These Aussies I dunno, 'how embarrassment'. (Effie - Acropolis Now).
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo love the wassailing song and Ford's rich deep voice especially.
My university used to host a Madrigal Dinner every year in December, where faculty would dress up in medieval costumes and entertain the participants, and the chorus of dramatic arts students would sing the Wassai Song, among others. Then, just before I left, the university decided the Madrigal wasn't inclusive enough and discontinued it. I was not sorry to leave the university, because I saw that as a sign of things to come.
