My favorite Beethoven symphony is his 6th (the "Pastoral"). It is alive with the joyous appreciation of nature, and was inspired by Beethoven's love of the countryside. Here is the third movement.

"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Listening to the Pastoral Symphony was one of the things which got me thru the 1970s.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if it got Beethoven through some rough times, too. The first time I heard it, I was delighted, and a bit taken aback, by its joyousness.
ReplyDeleteI love classical music, and I hope and pray that the internet, for all its sins, will keep this much alive.
ReplyDeleteI always liked the Huntley Brinkley Report as a kid for their theme song, Beethovens 9th, 2nd Movement.
ReplyDeleteGood recollection, Jonah! I didn't know that (or if I ever did, I forgot it).
ReplyDeleteSure the 9th is amazing, and all of them. Listen to the first few chords of the 9th, 1st Movt, he let's you know this is going to be BIG.
ReplyDeleteBrahms' 4 symphonies are a good follow up to Beethoven's 9 too. Brahms' 1st even begins by sounding like 'Beethoven's 10th'.
There was a Johann Sebastian Bach concert on the other night. It was done in a cathedral with period correct instruments. Amazing and joyful!
