We're losing a lot of the old baseball greats this year

Cincinnati Reds star Joe Morgan has died at age 77.

I always rooted for the Cardinals first to make it to the WS, then if the Cards didn't make it, the NL Central Division team that beat the Cardinals second.* So, a lot of years it was the Reds, and there were two Reds players I liked when they did make it. Joe Morgan was one of the two. I always thought he would be a good fit with the Cardinals teams back then.

RIP, Joe Morgan.

* Except for the Cubs. But they always choked, so it didn't matter. :)

I was always an admirer of the Cardinals, too. Just so many great players, such interesting history.

I played second base in high school (and in beer-league softball later), and have always admired second basemen, even if they played for the other team. I loved the way Morgan would get himself "psyched" at the plate by pumping his back arm waiting for the pitch.

I was a second baseman, too. Not sure how or why I got started at that position, but it's where I always played in two softball leagues I played in when I was younger. I was a decent athlete, but not notably so. To be honest, I always thought of second base as the 'right field' of the infield. It's where you put the infield player with the least range and weakest arm.* That's relative, of course.

No offense, Spiny. I'm sure you were the exception to the rule.

* Oh, so that's how I ended up at second base. :)

Yeah, the "weak arm" actually was part of it, but range and quick hands was why I was on the infield - I turned some pretty slick double plays, and it was pretty rare when a ground ball got past me. The coach really wanted my glove at 3rd, but that throw was just a bit too much.
