Having gone bald at an early age, I have long worn hats outdoors. One of my favorites is a Mallory fedora, which is a Stetson brand. I also have a nice Akubra, purchased in Australia in the early Nineties, which is a copy of the one worn by Tom Burlinson in Man From Snowy River. My favorite warm weather hat is a Jacaru, also purchased in Oz. It's very lightweight, made of (I shichu not) kangaroo hide. It does not give that weird "cowboys in bondage" vibe other leather hats often do.
Incidentally, the original Mallory company claimed to have invented the fedora. In the early Fifties they were bought by Stetson, who maintained the name as a line of chapeaus.
Speaking of which, here's something on the venerable bowler hat:
I once owned a brown derby, and also a (very grand) golden brown Homberg (this was in addition to seven or eight fedoras, and three Panamas). I still have several of the fedoras, all of them fur felt. I wore the fedoras to work every day (and the Panamas in the summer, of course). Every now and then I'd come across an article by some self-proclaimed fashion expert who trashed the idea of wearing fedoras, claiming that they were pretentious. It all depends, in my view, on how you wear them. If you wear them with confidence, as if you were born wearing the things, it's not difficult to pull off at all. With a double-breasted suit, neck tie and breast pocket handkerchief - well, all I know is, the outfit looked good on me. You see, my motto was always "if you're an empty suit, the suit better look good."
