Good one from Glenn Reynolds

"Nothing says 'normal, legitimate election' like a swearing-in behind 12 feet of razor wire and 25,000 troops that you’re not sure you can trust."

So it seems that the troops are securing the Nation's capital against an insurrection by domestic terrorists ... ... with unloaded weapons. Since they weren't issued ammunition.

Reminds me of all the times I rolled through West German on exercises, rifles, pistols, machine guns, blasting sets, mine detectors, classified communication documents, maps, you name it. Hell, one time I carried the keys to ammo bunkers stuffed full of explosives and blasting caps. A real bonanza for terrorists.

With the Red Army Faction, Soviet sympathizers, and Germans who just hated Americans itching to screw with us.

We once found where a bomb was wired to the brake lights of a fuel tanker. Fun!

And we didn't have round one of ammunition issued to us.

(Well, there may have been a couple personal sidearms tucked away. With live ammo. Just in case.)

"There's the right way, the wrong way, and the federal government's way."

(The original quote may have been garbled in translation.)

And on a similar note ... ... I wonder if the geniuses on the operational planning team for this Charley Foxtrot considered the easy pickings of all those fine military weapons spread out across a crime ridden city? A couple of 'hoods gets the drop on a checkpoint with their nine's, and scores half a dozen M4 carbines, easy peasy.

Think I'm joking? It happened once, during the Vietnam War. A company of recruits and their DIs at Fort Dix were attacked by criminals, who stole all their nice and shiny M16s. I believe the DIs had 5 rounds each, enough for a little covering fire as the recruits hauled ass out of there.

What? Me, outraged? Whatever makes you think that?

Being a target of the Red Army Faction & co was concerning.

I can see their logic but it's no excuse: they wanted to purge all former Nazis while the US ended up protecting the status quo when the dial switched to Cold War.

The Allies had begun de-Nazification immediately at the surrender, but after a few years it was wound down because it would have crippled W Germany and helped the Soviets - a strong Germany was needed as a buffer to the Soviets. This enabled fanatics to convince themselves that the US was conspiring with Nazis. So it seems they targeted the US along with Germans they identified as former Nazis. Didn't help that they were extremists and anti-capitalists (and some old Nazis were big in the finanace and business sectors which confirmed the fanatics in their own minds). Terrible being caught up in that. A dog's breakfast.

You can go into a place with the best intentions and still end up being hated. I'm grateful to hear your perspective Jeffs.

'extremist anti-capitalists' should read.

Good point, Bruce. Purging the ranks of any organization for [insert reason here] is counterproductive in the longterm. Loyalty is EARNED. ANd competence is a quality that must be preserved. Good leaders will balance those two factors.

Which is exactly the reason why this vetting of National Guard forces is only going to bite the donks in the ass. Good leaders they ain't.

But to add a festive inclusionary note, state flags have been installed on the Mall. People will obviously be consoled by the presence of their flag since they weren't allowed to attend. Nothing says legitimate election like disallowing voters to attend, installing razor wire, fences and overwhelming number of law enforcers.

Btw, has anyone heard that the internet will be shutdown during the Inauguration?

Hadn't heard that, but it would surely be another "confidence-building" measure, wouldn't it?

I sincerely hope no one will show up for the frauduration. That will put all this military showboating front and center and have people wondering what all the fuss was about. I wouldn't put it past the Democrats to call up some BLM and Antifa, though, and give them all red hats to wear.
