Some interesting observations...

...from Oregon Muse at Ace of Spades. A sample:

My biggest disappointment? No, not Tillerson, not Mattis, and don't get me started on Jeff Sessions. The guy was as useless as a condom in a convent. I never had much expectations for him. The winner here is Attorney General William Barr, because with him, I did. Seriously, with all the criminal activity hurled at President Trump, what, in the end, did he actually do about it? Oh, I know he investigated and even assigned John Durham with the expectation of criminal indictments, but all of that sort of went poof on November 4th, now, didn't it? That means that not only did the Democrats get away with stealing an election in broad daylight, which is maddening enough, but all of that other stuff, the spying on the Trump and the bogus "dossier" and the phony collusion charges leading to impeachment, most likely orchestrated by a cabal of Obama loyalists, that started the very day that Trump was inaugurated in 2017, is going to be swept down the memory hole and everyone is going to pretend that it never happened. It's absolutely infuriating. I'd like to know, what, exactly were Barr and Durham doing for all this time?

I think the biggest thing traditionalist Americans have going for them is precisely their actual traditions: a long history of respect for individual liberty and a constitution that attempts to stand as a buffer between the people and their government. It is one thing for a tyrannical king or dictator or oligarchy to oppress people who have little or no tradition of freedom, and to do so for ages. While our own traditions, both political and cultural, have eroded over the last hundred years due to the perfidious encroachments of what passes for "progressivism", the current still runs strong in tens of millions of Americans who are not about to offer their throats meekly to the hangman or willingly fall in line for a trip to the nearest reeducation center.

We on the right trust and respect our institutions, which means in general we respect the rule of law and expect it to be operative. The left does not. To them, laws are only valid if they can work for them, otherwise they are to be ignored or circumvented.

They don't play by rules, we do. If we decide to abandon the rules because they are no longer fairly applied (and right now they are not) then God help us all.

In the end Barr was just one man. He and Trump needed to be surrounded by a dedicated and passionately loyal team (like Elliot Ness's 'Untouchables'?), but that did not happen. In Trump's case you could fault his NY style of management - hiring and firing - it worked for him in his private business but tended to undermine loyalty in his team. Business is competitive while politics is about building lasting alliances. If Barr saw that even Trump's team weren't going to go down to the wire with him, then why should he sacrifice himself and be left high and dry?

bruce, he should have done his effin job.
Trump's biggest problem was that he thought others loved America as much as he did.
They love their power, perks and prerogatives much more.

Barr obviously saw his 'job' as to look as if he was doing something while actually working with the swamp to get rid of the Bad Orange Man.

Our defense is left to the courts (discounting ass-kissing Obama appointees) and Republican-dominated state legislatures and governors. I hope they are enough to get us back to a Constitutionally-oriented government in the future. We must do our part to let them know what will happen to them politically if they don't.

'Trump's big problem was that he thought others loved America as much as he did'

That sums it up totally alright!

Also, appopos of nothing, I'm getting sick and tired of blogger telling me every comment I make is an error. All I have to do is refresh the page and my comments do show up, so I'm trying hard not to fall for the paranoid notion that this is meant to deliberately annoy me or make me feel my comments won't be accepted. More likely, it's just blogger being blogger, subject to incompetent coding.

Paco, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're paranoid enough.

That's true, there's always room for more.

Rebecca: I'm pretty sure it's Blogger's coding or something similar. I've had some trouble lately loading photographs.
